Moxi vs Halo: Let’s Find Out Which One Is Best For You
What Are Moxi and Halo Lasers?
Alright, let’s talk lasers! If you’ve been diving into skincare and cosmetic treatments lately, you might’ve come across the Moxi and Halo lasers. These two popular treatments promise skin rejuvenation, clarity, and that glow we’re all chasing. But what makes them different? And how do they actually work? Here’s a quick overview.
What is a Moxi?
Moxi is a gentler, non-ablative laser, which means it doesn’t cause as much downtime or require heavy-duty aftercare. It works by using a fractionated 1927 nm laser energy to lightly resurface the skin.
This laser penetrates approximately two sheets of paper in depth, specifically targeting the layers of skin where pigment lives (the basal layer).
This process encourages skin renewal without removing layers, which makes it a fantastic option if you’re looking for a refresh with minimal recovery.
Moxi is perfect for early signs of aging, like fine lines and all types of dyspigmentation (especially melasma). If you’re simply looking for a way to maintain and brighten your complexion. I’d say it’s a bit like a seasonal tune-up for your skin—it’s designed to keep things fresh and radiant without the commitment of a big treatment.

What is Halo?
Halo is a hybrid laser, combining both ablative 2940 nm and non-ablative 1470 nm wavelengths. This dual approach means it can work on both the outer layer (epidermis) and the deeper layer (dermis) at the same time.
It’s a bit more intensive, which is why people often see greater changes in things like sun damage, dyspigmentation, and fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity. I call it my silver-bullet treatment. It will improve any/all signs of aging and sun damage at least 20% with each treatment.
Essentially, Halo goes a bit deeper than Moxi, so it’s better suited for people who want a noticeable difference or have more stubborn skin issues. But because it’s ablative, there’s a bit more downtime involved—think a full week. First comes swelling (days 1-3) then redness and sloughing off of MENDS or sandpaper debris (days 4-7). Tinted sunscreen like EltaMD is great to conceal.
It’s a “go big or go home” laser that really delivers, especially if you’re dealing with pigmentation from too much sun (which, let’s be honest, is a lot of us!). If you are leaning towards Halo, check out a more detailed article here.
Key Differences Between Moxi and Halo Lasers
When it comes to choosing a Moxi vs Halo there are key differences that set both apart. My elevator pitch is something like this, “If you want to address textural concerns, Halo. If you want to address stubborn pigment, Moxi.”
Technology and Intensity:
- Moxi is a non-ablative, fractionated laser. In plain terms, that means it doesn’t remove the skin’s outer layer—instead, it delivers controlled energy that helps your skin renew itself gradually
- Moxi is a gentler option, perfect if you’re just dipping your toes into laser treatments or looking for a low-maintenance way to brighten up your complexion. Quarterly treatments are required to see noticeable improvements.
- Halo, on the other hand, combines non-ablative and ablative wavelengths, making it a hybrid laser. This combination allows it to treat both the surface layer and deeper layers of skin simultaneously.
- Halo’s dual-wavelength technology packs more of a punch, making it ideal for treating tougher skin concerns, like sun damage, deeper lines, and rough texture. This is even stronger than Fraxel Dual.

Treatment Sessions and Downtime:
- Moxi is designed for quick treatments—think of it as a “lunchtime laser.” A session is usually around 15-30 minutes without numbing creams.
- Most people experience mild redness afterward, similar to a light sunburn.
- With Moxi, you can usually go back to your regular routine within a day or two, and there’s little to no peeling. Makeup can be applied the next day.
- Quarterly treatments are recommended for Moxi, or a month-to-month package of 3-4 treatments for optimal results.
- Halo, typically requires a bit more commitment. A session takes around 45 minutes to an hour, and because it’s more intense, there’s 3 days of social downtime involved. Days 4-7 tinted sunscreen can be applied to conceal redness.
- With Halo downtime comes a bigger transformation, especially if you’re dealing with more stubborn issues like pigmentation or fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity. Combine with BBL for the most magical transformation in one, single session!
- Up to three, monthly treatments per year for those of us that have significant sun damage or age-related concerns. Maintenance is usually one every few years (combined with routine skincare practices of course).
Pain Level:
- Moxi is on the gentler side, and most people find it very tolerable WITH topical numbing cream. I wouldn’t recommend this treatment without any numbing cream and/or laughing gas. There really is no point in trying to be a hero. For those 5-7 minutes, just opt for the topical anesthetic.
- You’ll likely feel some warmth or a slight prickling sensation as the lasers glides back and forth on the skin.
- Halo, on the other hand, can be a bit spicier. The combination of ablative and non-ablative wavelengths makes it more intense, and while numbing cream helps, you might feel a stronger “heat” sensation during and after the treatment. I always provide my patients with both numbing cream (for one hour) and laughing gas. This combination of pain mitigation has been a game-changer for us! Patients are much happier this way and more compliant which will give them the best outcome overall.
- After the Halo treatment is complete you can expect a sunburn sensation that lasts an hour or so then completely vanishes!
Ideal Candidates:
- Moxi is great for addressing early signs of aging, pigmentation, or simply enhancing your skin’s glow. Also, if you’ve had more aggressive lasers and you just want to maintain, Moxi is your friend.
- If you’ve tried several IPL’s or BBL’s and there is still some stubborn pigment that re-appears in the summer or just won’t go away, Moxi is your answer! Make the switch and your skin will thank you!
- If you have more substantial concerns—think sun damage, wrinkles, or fine lines that skincare just isn’t addressing—Halo’s deeper reach might be exactly what you need. Editor’s note:
- If you are closer to 60 y/o and you have those pesky lip lines or loose jowl skin, the Micro Laser Peel or Contour TRL is absolutely your answer! Check out the article here.

Moxi vs. Halo: Side Effects and Recovery
- After a Moxi session, you might notice redness, warmth, and a bit of swelling, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within 24-48 hours, making it perfect if you’re looking for minimal downtime.
- The skin may feel rough for a few days as it exfoliates, but there’s usually no heavy peeling
- Many people can easily return to their routine, though you’ll want to avoid sun exposure for a few days since your skin will be more sensitive. If combining with IPL/BBL, expect some swelling one day after treatment.
- After Halo, you’ll likely experience several days of redness, swelling, and a “bronzing” effect as your skin begins to shed. It’s normal to feel a bit tight or itchy, too.
- Sometimes with Halo, you may experience hyperpigmentation/hypopigmentation which is only a temporary skin response in skin of color but make sure to tell your provider so they can recommend the right fix! Usually it would consist of another laser treatment with light settings or latisse, retinol or other tyrosinase inhibitors.
Cost Comparison of Moxi vs Halo Treatments
Let’s get down to one of the big questions: how much do these treatments actually cost? Laser treatments are an investment, and Moxi and Halo are no exception. Knowing the typical costs and understanding what you’re getting for that price can make it easier to choose the right option for your skin—and your budget.
- With Moxi, you’re generally looking at around $500 to $1000 per session. This can vary depending on your location, the provider’s experience, and whether the practice includes extras like post-treatment skincare products or a follow-up.
- Moxi’s price range is lower because it’s a non-ablative treatment with less downtime, making it an affordable option if you’re aiming for maintenance or subtle skin enhancement
- Halo treatments are a bit more of an investment, typically ranging from $1,200 to $2,500 per session.
- Halo is often considered a one-and-done option for many people; they see significant improvement after a single session, although some may choose to do one or two follow-ups if they have deeper pigmentation or scars OR if they are adding in IPL/BL.
- For maintenance, some people opt for a Halo session every one to two years to keep their skin in top shape, making it a higher initial investment but with long-lasting benefits.
Now, you might be wondering—is the cost worth it? Unanimously, YES! These lasers definitely outweigh skincare products capabilities!
For Moxi, the value comes from its ability to maintain and improve skin with minimal downtime, making it ideal if you’re new to laser treatments or prefer a low-key approach to skin care. Over time, those consistent sessions can help prevent more pronounced signs of aging and maintain a fresh glow. It’s a little like a skincare tune-up that keeps you looking radiant without a massive upfront commitment. Outweighing skincare products capabilities!
Halo, on the other hand, is a deeper investment with longer-term results, making it ideal if you’re looking for a serious skin overhaul. The hybrid technology in Halo yields results that can last a year or more, depending on your skin and how well you protect it post-treatment.
If you’ve got stubborn issues that regular facials or peels just haven’t managed to fix, Halo could offer that long-term value by delivering more noticeable improvements in fewer sessions.
In the end, whether you choose Moxi or Halo depends on your skin needs and your budget. Both lasers offer great value in different ways, so it’s all about deciding if you want the maintenance-friendly Moxi or the powerhouse Halo for deeper, long-lasting results!

Moxi vs. Halo for Different Skin Types
Starting with Moxi, it’s a gentle, non-ablative laser that’s generally suitable for almost all skin types, including sensitive and darker skin tones. Since Moxi doesn’t aggressively remove the outer layer of skin, it minimizes the risk of hyperpigmentation, which is a common concern for those with deeper skin tones.
Moxi works really well for treating pigmentation from acne scarring in skin of color, as well as early signs of aging, and generally boosting the skin’s overall brightness and texture. It’s ideal for those who have sensitive skin or simply want a gradual improvement without significant downtime.
Now Halo on the other hand is an excellent choice for all skin tones, however there’s a slightly higher risk of pigmentation issues, especially with the ablative part of the treatment. That doesn’t mean Halo is off-limits; it just requires extra caution in the form of pre-treatment and may need to be adjusted by your provider to ensure it’s safe for your skin tone.
How to Choose Between Moxi and Halo Lasers
First off, both of these devices are a hole-in-one! Technology (these days) has brought lasers to the forefront of anti-aging. For anyone that is skeptical, consider this statement from one of the top international Dermatologists from Miami, “If people had any idea what topical skincare products are actually getting into the skin, this wouldn’t be the billion-dollar industry it is.”
Moxi is like that low-key friend who gives you a gentle nudge, perfect for those who want subtle, consistent improvements without too much fuss.
Halo might be calling your name. Halo’s hybrid technology reaches deeper layers of the skin, so it’s ideal if you want noticeable results after just one or two sessions.

Another essential step? Chat with your provider. Find someone that has access to more than a few laser devices so you will get a more comprehensive consultation. They’ll be your best resource for figuring out which treatment aligns with your goals and skin type. Here are a few questions to ask during your consultation to help narrow it down:
- “Which laser do you think would work best for my specific skin concerns?”
- “What kind of results can I realistically expect from Moxi vs Halo?”
- “What will the recovery process look like for my skin type?”
- “How many sessions do you think I’ll need to reach my goals?”
- “Are there any specific aftercare steps I should follow for Moxi or Halo?”
These questions not only help set realistic expectations but also give you a clearer picture of what you’re signing up for. And honestly, a good provider should be happy to answer all of these; it’s a sign they care about your results and safety.
