What Is BBL Laser and How Does It Work?

BroadBand Light (BBL) is an advanced version of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). It uses light energy to target pigment, redness, and skin irregularities. In fact, it has over 7 interchangeable filters to use for various concerns;
- 420 nm (acne)
- 515 nm (pigmentation)
- 560 nm (vascular)
- 590 nm (vascular/hair)
- 640 nm (pigment/hair)
- 695 nm (pigment/hair)
- 800 nm (inflammation/vascular)
Not only does the BBL perfect your complexion, it has also been studied to change the genetic expression from older skin to that of younger skin within 4 treatments, once a month. So, does BBL laser tighten skin? I don’t like to make claims that it defies gravity however it can absolutely induce firmer, more youthful looking skin.
Not only is BBL great for the face but also the neck, chest, hands and other areas that may need some tlc.
Is BBL Laser Worth It? Who Should Consider This Treatment?

In terms of correction, BBL laser is ideal for people with sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and redness. If you are a darker skin type, you likely experience sun damage in different way. BBL is best for skin types I-IV that have rosacea and/or brown spots.
The BBL laser is worth it if you can afford $400-$600 quarterly, you want to improve all areas of skin aging, you have a lower threshold for pain, and your schedule is just too busy to go through a recovery period. You will absolutely require quarterly treatments but each session will slowly improve texture and mild laxity bit by bit.
This is not the treatment for you if you have severe wrinkling or skin laxity. Although it may improve your complexion, do yourself a favor and don’t expect miracles.
Here a list of what BBL laser CAN treat;
- broken blood vessels
- red moles
- hyperpigmentation
- freckles
- sun/age spots
- mild laxity
- skin crepiness
- unwanted hair
Does BBL Laser Tighten Skin? What You Need to Know

BBL primarily targets pigmentation and redness, not deep skin laxity. Again, it can induce skin firmness after several treatments but it shouldn’t be advertised as “skin tightening”
Below I’ve listed the common skin concerns that BBL does NOT treat;
- melasma
- darker skin tones
- moderate skin laxity
- overall skin flushing
I can tell you that when we combine BBL with other treatments like Halo, Ellacor or Clear & Brilliant, tightening effects are achieved.
Does BBL Laser Hurt? What to Expect During Treatment

Without any pain mitigation, you will feel a sharp, hot, rubber band snap. I think for most people it is tolerable but much, much more comfortable with topical numbing solution, an air chiller and/or ProNox (laughing gas). That way, you really don’t feel anything. As pictured above, this gentleman had both a BBL and ProFractional with no problem because we used all three methods of pain management.
Similarly to IPL, BBL can cause swelling. That is why I always encourage patients to use the zimmer chiller air fan. I believe that makes a incredible difference when you wake up the next day.
Post-treatment redness and mild swelling are common but fade within hours.
How Much Does BBL Laser Cost? Pricing Breakdown

I know it isn’t what you want to hear but cost can vary depending on various factors. Here is another article that hits on pricing more specifically for all types of lasers if you need to know more.
The cost of BBL laser varies depending on location and provider. The average price falls between $300-$700. Packages of 3-5 treatments often offer discounts.
Maintenance sessions may be needed every 6-12 months. If combined with other treatment modalities, price can be discounted as well.
If you think about how much you spend on skincare products, you will likely end up saving money this way. It will likely result in a win-win situation. Your results will be obvious, by doing less.
BBL Laser vs. Other Skin Treatments: Which One Is Right for You?

- BBL vs. IPL – BBL is a more advanced and precise version of IPL.
- BBL vs. Fraxel – Fraxel penetrates deeper, better for scars and wrinkles.
- BBL vs. Microneedling RF – Microneedling RF is for revolumizing, BBL is superficial for complexion concerns.
- BBL vs. Halo Laser – Halo is for deeper skin resurfacing and requires social downtime. BBL + Halo = Amazing results
Pros and Cons of BBL Laser Treatment
Pros:
✔️ Improves sun damage, redness, and hyperpigmentation.
✔️ Minimal downtime and quick recovery.
✔️ Stimulates collagen for subtle skin firming.
✔️ Safe for regular maintenance treatments.
Cons:
❌ Not a deep skin-tightening treatment.
❌ Results are gradual and require multiple sessions.
❌ Less effective for deeper wrinkles and severe sagging.
❌ Not ideal for darker skin tones due to risk of pigmentation changes.
What to Expect Before, During, and After BBL Laser Treatment

Before Treatment:
- Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for 2 weeks.
- Stop retinoids and exfoliants a few days before.
During Treatment:
- Quick, 15-30 minute procedure.
- Minimal discomfort with cooling technology.
After Treatment:
- Redness and slight swelling for a few hours.
- Freckles and pigment may darken before flaking off.
- Avoid sun exposure and wear SPF daily.
Conclusion:
BBL laser is an excellent option for improving sun damage, redness, and pigmentation while offering mild collagen stimulation. While BBL laser can tighten skin slightly, it’s not a full skin-tightening treatment. If you’re looking for a non-invasive solution with little downtime, BBL laser is worth it—especially for those looking to maintain youthful, even-toned skin. However, if you need deeper tightening, combining BBL with other treatments might be your best bet. Interested in seeing if BBL is right for you?
